The Sacramento Room, the "jewel in the crown" of Sacramento's Central Library, is a fitting setting for the Sacramento Public Library's Special Collections. The beautiful room, which opened in April 1995 due to the fundraising efforts of the Sacramento Public Library Foundation, is located in the Central Library at 828 I Street, Sacramento.

The second floor of the original 1917 Carnegie library provides an elegant, academic atmosphere with rich mahogany casework, high ceilings, and antique wall finishes. Its metal and glass light fixtures are recreations from the originals.

The Sacramento Room contains several special collections including the Sacramento Area Authors Collection, the Printing and Book Arts History Collection, and the Special Collection.

On June 21, 2007, the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Public Library Foundation voted to establish an endowment for the Sacramento Room.  Nearly $1 million additional dollars have been dedicated to the endowment through generous bequests, support from the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, and donors who joined the Founders’ Circle or gave to our Sacramento Room direct mail appeal.  

The Foundation will continue to increase the principal of the endowment in support of archives that can live in perpetuity. Uses of the funds include:
• Digitizing segments of the collection including old and rare photographs, which will give customers access from branches, homes and businesses through the internet.
• Preservation of materials.
• Restoration of materials.
• Opening the Sacramento Room for more hours.
