The Foundation of the Sacramento Public Library has an extraordinary partnership with the region’s Persian community. We intend to honor this unique relationship on September 6, 2008 at Persian Night Celebration 955.
For the past 11 years, a committee of American-Iranian community leaders has orchestrated an annual fundraising event to enhance the multicultural programming of Sacramento’s 27 public libraries. This event is hosted by prominent American-Iranian families residing in the Sacramento Metropolitan area and is open to the public. Tickets are $150 per guest and can be purchased through the Foundation or the Persian Language Advisory Committee of the Sacramento Public Library. Persian Night programs include but are not limited to gourmet Persian dinners & deserts, traditional Persian music and dancing, and an auction on Persian artworks. Notable Iranian-American scholars and community figures are invited to this event.
Our library system now houses one of the most significant collections of Persian language materials outside of Iran, featuring over 2,000 titles, 15 magazines and newspapers, more than 800 CDs and videos and 2,500 volumes including the Encyclopaedic Iranica. Our community is enriched by this magnificent collection and our growing Persian population truly appreciates and values free access to these resources.
It is also worth mentioning, the Persian Language Speakers Series draws a significant number of individuals each year to the library to hear fascinating presentations from distinguished Iranian scholars, doctors, psychologists, musicians, dancers, authors and poet from around the world. For many, it’s the offering of languages classes to Iranian children and English-speaking adults that has enriched their life. We are proud to boast; more than 400 students have mastered the language.
